Tsedal is made for Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo parishes in the United States. Members give to their parish, hear its announcements, and keep the feasts and fasts of the Ethiopian calendar, all under the parish’s own name, in English, Amharic or Tigrinya.

What members find in the app

Giving

Give once or every month to the funds the parish sets up, such as the tithe, the building fund or a feast-day offering, by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer.

Announcements

News from the parish arrives as a notification within minutes, in the member’s own language, with the date written the Ethiopian way.

The church calendar

Services, feasts, fasts and parish events on the Ethiopian and Gregorian calendars, with the movable feasts worked out by the Bahire Hasab.

Gifts go straight to the parish

Payments are processed by Stripe. Each parish has its own Stripe account, so every gift is the parish’s from the moment it’s given.

Tsedal never holds the money

A gift is charged on the parish’s own account and paid out to the parish’s bank every week.

A receipt for every gift

Givers get a receipt for each gift and a statement for the year, in the parish’s legal name with its EIN.

Fees are out in the open

Card and bank fees come out of each gift. A giver can choose to cover them, so the parish receives the whole amount.

Every parish is checked before it takes a gift

Before a parish can accept gifts, the Tsedal team reviews its registration with the state, its EIN, and a letter from its diocese confirming that it is under the Holy Synod. No one can open a giving page in a church’s name without it.

For parish councils

A parish volunteer can go from signing up to accepting gifts in an afternoon, and can stop and come back at any step. We help in English and Amharic, by phone or video call.

  1. Register the parishIts name, address, priest and contact person.
  2. Verify itThe EIN, the legal registration and the diocese’s letter, reviewed by the Tsedal team.
  3. Connect the bank accountThrough Stripe, so gifts go straight to the parish.
  4. Brand itThe parish’s logo, colour, saint and welcome message.
  5. Set up givingThe funds members give to, from a starter list or the parish’s own.
  6. Invite the teamThe treasurer, council members and whoever posts the news, each with their role.
  7. LaunchA poster with a QR code for the church, and a few words for the priest to say after Kidase.
